Q1. HP SIM supports up to 5,000 servers.  What does the 5,000 include?
A1.

This includes OS instances such as physical servers and virtual machines, but other devices such as iLO and OA are in addition to this.  For example, we could manage 5,000 server blades plus 5,000 iLOs, 500 OA, 500 switches, etc.

(For this enhancement you will need x64 native and additional memory)

A SIM plug-in will provide a systematic and guided process to setting up managed nodes for Insight Control, ID-VSE, HP IO, HP IR, VSEMgmt, and their dependencies

Q6. What is SIM Care Pack?
A6. An easy simple to order HP SIM Care Pack, part #  UR389E, will be introduced November 16th.  The Care Pack will consist of 10 incidents of 24x7 SW Technical Support.  HP Software Technical Support HP Care Pack Service provides comprehensive remote software support services. With HP Software Technical Support, your IT staff have access to HP Response Centers. HP Response Center engineers work with your IT team to provide advice on software features and use; problem diagnosis and resolution; software defect identification; and access to patches. This service also provides electronic access to comprehensive support information.
Q7. What is HP SIM/HP uCMDB DDM integration module?
A7. A new Discovery and Dependency Mapping integration module that can import configuration data discovered by HP SIM into the HP uCMDB. The data includes relationships such as Enclosure to Blade, Management Processor to Server, VM Host to VM Guest, and Partitions (npar and vpar) to Complex. It also captures detailed inventory information such as serial numbers and driver and firmware versions. The DDM scripts are scheduled within uCMDB to run on a periodic basis to collect information directly from the databases of one or more HP SIM CMS's and use it to create configuration items (CI's) within uCMDB. Q1. Can HP SIM 5.3 discover systems with IPv6 addresses?
A1. Yes, HP SIM 5.3 can discover IPv6 addresses using the IPv4 network
Q2. Can HP SIM 5.3 communicate with managed nodes over an IPv6 network?
A2. No, HP SIM cannot communicate with managed systems over an IPv6 network. This will be available with future releases of IPv6.
Q3. Does HP SIM 5.3 support embedded hypervisors?
A3. Yes, HP SIM 5.3 fully supports ESX 3i, Citrix XenSource and Hyper-V.
Q4. Can I run remote tools on AIX and Solaris systems?
A4. HP SIM 5.3 fully supports launching tools on remote AIX and Solaris systems.
Q5. Can I associate a credential with a group of systems to discover?
A5. Yes, the new credential lets you associate a set of credentials with a group of discovered systems.
Q6. Can I run hp-ux tools from a windows or a Linux CMS?
A6. With HP SIM 5.3 you can run the hp-ux mgt tools from a Linux or a Windows CMS, without the need of purchasing Extensions for HP SIM on Microsoft Windows software package (as it was needed in previous releases)

A7. From the Installation default set, the HP Insight software Vulnerability & Patch Management Pack and HP Performance management Pack have been removed, resulting to a quick and easy HP SIM installation.
Q8. How does HP SIM 5.2 helps in setting up the managed nodes?
A8. HP SIM features have been enhanced to make setting up managed systems an easier task, and the new Manage Communications feature enables you to troubleshoot communication problems between the CMS and the managed systems.
Q9. Can the users add or update security settings on HP SIM 5.2?
A9. Yes, there is a single setting to enable users to add or update security settings on HP SIM 5.2.
Q10. Has the Reporting been improved with HP SIM 5.2?
A10. HP SIM 5.2 added a new HP Version Control Agent report that displays baseline information, and data collection of software/firmware (sw/fw) baseline name and version for systems that have a Version Control Agent (VCA) installed.
Q11. What is new with Localization of HP SIM 5.2?
A11. HP SIM 5.2 supports Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Korean.
Q12. Can I upgrade from HP Systems Insight Manager 5.0 to HP Systems Insight Manager 5.3?
A12. Yes. Simply follow the upgrade instructions provided with the software.
Q13. How do I transition from Insight Manager 7 to HP Systems Insight Manager?
A13. Upgrading from Insight Manager 7 to HP SIM 5.0 is a two-step process.
  1. Upgrade to HP SIM 4.2: You must be running Insight Manager 7 SP2.3 to upgrade to HP Systems Insight Manager 4.2. If you are running a version of Insight Manager 7 earlier than Insight Manager 7 SP2.3, upgrade to Insight Manager 7 SP2.3 before upgrading to HP SIM 4.2. If you have Insight Manager 7 Service Pack 2, 2.1, or 2.2 installed, the migration process offers an automatic upgrade to Insight Manager 7 Service Pack 2.3. If you have a version earlier than Service Pack 2, you are directed to the HP website to download the Softpaq that will enable you to upgrade to Insight Manager 7 SP2.3. Refer to the Insight Manager 7 User's Guide for information on upgrading from Insight Manager 7 to Insight Manager 7 SP2.3. Refer to the "Transitioning from Insight Manger 7 to HP Systems Insight Manager" white paper at the HP SIM Information Library page for more in-depth detail on this process.

    There is a transition utility for Insight Manager 7. This tool will transfer all Insight Manager 7 customizations to HP Systems Insight Manager either through an in place upgrade or by transferring settings from an Insight Manager 7 system to a HP Systems Insight Manager system running on a separate server. Systems Insight Manager will take advantage of the same agents and instrumentation that Insight Manager 7 uses today.

  2. Then upgrade HP SIM 4.2 to HP SIM 5.0: Go to the HP SIM - Windows Download page and download the lastest version of HP SIM -Windows.
Q14. How do I migrate from Servicecontrol Manager to HP Systems Insight Manager?
A14. HP Systems Insight Manager 5.0 - Linux and HP-UX 11i now provide a migration tool designed to transfer all Servicecontrol Manager customizations to HP Systems Insight Manager either through an in- place upgrade or by transferring settings from a Servicecontrol Manager system to a HP Systems Insight Manager system running on a separate server. Take advantage of the same tools available in HP Servicecontrol Manager plus all of the features introduced from Insight Manager 7.
Q15. How can I get a copy of HP Systems Insight Manager?
A15. HP delivers Systems Insight Manager with all ProLiant and HP-UX 11i for HP 9000 and HP Integrity Servers and application release software. HP SIM is only licensed for HP customers using HP hardware products. The Windows, HP -UX 11i, and Linux versions are available for download today.
Q16. Is there a command line available for Systems Insight Manager?
A16. Yes. All versions of Systems Insight Manager support command line access. For the list of features accessible through the command line, please consult the Systems Insight Manager Users Guide.
Q17. Can Systems Insight Manager manage clients and printers in addition to HP servers?
A17. HP Client Manager, HP Web JetAdmin, and HP Power Manager all offer Systems Insight Manager plug-ins. Installing these plug-ins makes these applications available from within Systems Insight Manager.
Q18. How do HP Operations Manager, HP Network Node Manager i-series (NNMi), and now HP Systems Insight Manager work together to help me manage my entire IT environment?
A18. HP provides the most comprehensive selection of system, network, and service level management tools on the market today. Use Systems Insight Manager to ensure availability of hardware resources such as servers, clients, printers, and storage devices. Use HP Operations Center products to provide management of heterogeneous networks, applications, SAN infrastructure, and to holistically manage all of the elements required to execute and measure delivery of IT services. HP Operations Center integration modules for HP Insight Management Agents ensure that detailed hardware management information is made available through both NNMi and Operations Manager.
Q19. How do I ensure that events sent to Systems Insight Manager are also sent to my Operations Manager console?
A19. HP Operations Manager provides Smart Plug-ins or SPIs for the HP Insight Management Agents. HP Operations Manager will automatically collect and decode detailed hardware pre-failure and failure information from servers running the HP Insight Management Agent.
Q20. How do I get support if I install HP Systems Insight Manager on Windows or Linux?
A20. HP SIM doesn't have a dedicated HP Care Pack Service. Instead, customers will be supported for HP Systems Insight Manager if they have one of the following for the applicable server:
  1. A valid warranty (90 days Global Limited Warranty)

  2. Purchase Insight Control Suites (having 1-year 24x7 Technical Support embedded with the license purchase)

  3. If the question is (Service Essentials) ISEE/RSP related then HP SIM will be supported as it pertains to ISEE/RSP with a Hardware Warranty or Hardware Contract.
If a customer doesn’t have any of the three listed above, then a “per incident chargeable support” will apply subject to availability within the respective regional HP Response Center.
Q21. How do I get support if I install HP Systems Insight Manager on HP-UX?
A21. Support for HP Systems Insight Manager on HP-UX 11i is covered under your HP-UX 11i support contract. Customers should contact the HP-UX 11i Response Center in North America and their local Country Response Center in other regions.
Q22. Do you have any product training available that will get me up to speed quickly?
A22. HP offers customer training for HP Systems Insight Manager under the Technical support section.

A1. By plugging various HP management tools into Systems Insight Manager, you can benefit in the following ways:
  • Single point of access for managing your HP hardware through their management plug-ins

    • event management and notification services for HP servers, storage, printers, clients, power and other devices

A2. Yes. Systems Insight Manager includes a mechanism for users to integrate their own applications through the creation of a simple configuration file.
